How to Search Your ChatGPT History
ChatGPT shows you a list of conversation titles — but there's no search box. If you have thousands of conversations, finding a specific one is nearly impossible. Here are your options.
Option 1: Browser text search (Ctrl+F)
The simplest workaround: open ChatGPT, scroll through your conversation list so it loads in the browser, then press Ctrl+F and search for a keyword in the title. This only works if the title contains the word you're searching for — which it often doesn't, since ChatGPT auto-generates titles.
Limitation: only finds conversations that have scrolled into view, and only searches titles, not the actual content.
Option 2: Export your data and search locally
OpenAI lets you download all your ChatGPT conversations:
- Go to Settings → Data Controls → Export Data
- Click "Export" — OpenAI emails you a download link within a few hours
- Download the ZIP file → it contains a
conversations.jsonfile - Open it in a text editor or search tool
The JSON file contains every message in every conversation. You can search it with any text editor (Ctrl+F) or grep. The downside: it's raw JSON, the structure is nested, and it doesn't update — you have to export again for new conversations.
Option 3: Use a searchable archive
The best long-term solution is importing your ChatGPT export into a tool that indexes and searches it properly — with keyword search, semantic (meaning-based) search, and the ability to ask questions about your history.
That's what Backscroll does: you upload the conversations.json export once, and it becomes a searchable, queryable memory. Search for "the API rate limiting solution from March" and find it instantly.
What you can't do (yet)
OpenAI doesn't offer a public API for reading conversation history, so any real-time sync is either unofficial or requires a browser extension. The data export is currently the only official way to get your full history out. Anthropic, Google, and other providers have similar export mechanisms.
Turn your ChatGPT export into a searchable memory
Upload your conversations.json to Backscroll. Keyword search, semantic search, and "ask your history" — all in one place. Works with ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini exports.
