How to Search Your ChatGPT History

Option 1: Native search bar (titles only)

ChatGPT has a magnifying-glass icon in the left sidebar (available for Plus and Teams users). It searches conversation titles — useful if the auto-generated title contains a distinctive keyword. It will not find something mentioned inside a message if the title doesn't reflect it.

Limitation: title-only. Auto-generated titles like “Python Debugging Help” or “Marketing Ideas” are often too generic to be useful search targets. Users have reported it returning unrelated conversations.

Option 2: Export your data and search locally

OpenAI lets you download all your ChatGPT conversations:

1. Go to Settings → Data Controls → Export Data
2. Click "Export" — OpenAI emails you a download link within a few hours
3. Download the ZIP file → it contains a conversations.json file
4. Open it in a text editor or search tool

The JSON file contains every message in every conversation. You can search it with any text editor (Ctrl+F) or grep. The downside: it's raw JSON, the structure is nested, and it doesn't update — you have to export again for new conversations.

Option 3: Use a searchable archive

The best long-term solution is importing your ChatGPT export into a tool that indexes and searches it properly — with keyword search, semantic (meaning-based) search, and the ability to ask questions about your history.

What you can't do (yet)

OpenAI doesn't offer a public API for reading conversation history, so any real-time sync is either unofficial or requires a browser extension. The data export is currently the only official way to get your full history out. Anthropic, Google, and other providers have similar export mechanisms.
